A Cautionary Tale

The true story of a 19-year-old student’s visit to the emergency room

Decorative

“I went to the hospital with severe stomach pains. I waited five hours. I felt scared, in pain, frustrated that they weren’t really doing anything. After two more hours, the pain got worse. I talked to someone, but they just left me sitting there. After two hours, the pain got worse. I threw up and they finally took me back. They checked me and I had a fever. I was shaking. I could barely move. The pain was so bad, I couldn’t even get up to pee.”

This student’s appendix had ruptured. She went into emergency surgery all alone. The hospital’s delay in diagnosing and treating her caused a simple operation to become a complicated, risky surgery. The complications brought her back to the hospital the following week. She was hospitalized for 28 (TWENTY-EIGHT) more days. She had to drop out of her classes for the semester. She is still emotionally traumatized by the experience and doesn’t like to talk about it.

Would emergency room staff have ignored this college student if she’d had her own personal nurse by her side, fighting for her with the right words to convey the seriousness of her situation?
